It’s been a while since we posted our last New Zealand update… We left New Zealand almost 2 months ago after an amazing year (and it’s only 2 weeks till we leave the Netherlands again, on our way back to Canada… but that’s another story!). So, I think it is about time for an update on what’s going on in our lives and to show you some pictures of our last few weeks in NZ.
Bas’ last school day was on December 12th. We left Auckland on the 13th of December for a 2 week trip to the Southern part of the South Island. This was our itinerary:

After our Summer Holiday – the last few weeks in NZ
We got back in Auckland on the 28th. After unpacking our stuff, we packed again for a few days camping with Aaron and Val, in the Coromandel. We had a wonderful time together and we enjoyed a memorable New Year’s celebration! (on the beach!!). We also went to White Island (an active volcano!) with them, before heading back to Auckland on January 2nd. After that, we had a few days to pack and sort our stuff. Fortunately we had been able to find a South African family who were moving to New Zealand for a year and who wanted to buy all of our stuff (furniture etc) and even including our car! So, we spent our final weekend in Auckland moving our stuff to their place. They were very kind and let us stay the last few nights of our time in NZ at their place (in our own bed). Quite an amazing arrangement! The last night, we spent with Marten and Mirjam, Dutch friends who we also met at the very beginning of our NZ year. We didn’t fly till 11.30pm on January 9, so we decided to spend the day with Marten and their children on the beach (and it was the warmest day of the whole year that we were there, +38 Celsius!) Such a fun way to end our year, before heading to the snow back in the Netherlands!
Back in the Netherlands – for a little while
So, at the moment we are back here in the Netherlands. We are spending those two months travelling all over the Netherlands seeing lots of family and friends, and cleaning out and packing up our stuff in our home in Groningen (where a friend of us is living at the moment). Meanwhile, I (Judith) have a lot of work to do for Talaria’s clients as well. No wonder we haven’t really been able to update as soon as we would have liked! Anyway, we have 2 more weeks left in the Netherlands before we head off again, on our next trip. As we have said before (see blog on future plans) we missed Yellowknife and Bas will try to find a job and land a permit during the 4 months that we are there. I think the biggest adjustment may well be the weather: It’s not as cold here in the Netherlands as it will be in Yellowknife…, but of course much colder than sunny and summery New Zealand was!
Picture time
I will try and post more pictures (still almost 1700 to sort out…) soon! But here you can already find some pictures of the first few days of our Summer Holiday on the South Island.
1) Christchurch
2) Akaroa (daytrip from Christchurch)
3) The drive to and our stay in Arthur’s Pass
4) The drive to Franz Josef and a glimpse of the Franz Josef Glacier
Before we head off on another trip to the South Island tomorrow, we still owe you pictures of our trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island. We tried to go there on December 2nd, but due to stormy weather, the trip was cancelled. Since we were in the area (about an hour drive from where we live) anyway, we decided to take the opportunity to walk around in Shakespear Regional Park, which was just around the corner from where the boat departed. So, the first pictures you’ll see below are from Shakespear.
We tried Tiritiri Matangi Island again on Saturday December 8th, and this time the weather was perfect. The guided walk on the island was awesome. Our guide took his time and we spent approx. 3 hours walking around, (trying to) spot birds and getting to know more about the bird sanctuary island. It was difficult to take pictures of the birds, so you’ll see more photos of views and so on, but they are worth looking at nevertheless! π
Two weeks ago, on November 18, we went on a trip to Hobbiton with our friends Aaron and Val. Hobbiton is located near Matamata, approximately 2 hours by car from where we live. The 1.5 hour guided tour through the movie set village of Hobbiton was totally worth the drive! It was awesome to walk where the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and – of course – the Hobbit has been filmed. It felt like there a hobbit could come around the corner any time asking what we were doing in their village! Except for one underwear-drenching downpour near the end of the tour, the weather was lovely and so are the pictures:
Last weekend we decided to take a last-minute little vacation to the West Coast of the North Island. Our friends Timo and Olivia had recommended staying at the Blue Chook Inn in Kawhia, and since they were already fully booked for Saturday, we decided to go on Friday. This worked out especially well, since Bas had the afternoon off; this meant we could leave at 1 pm! After a beautiful 3 hour drive, we arrived in Kawhia. Since it was summery warm weather, we changed in summer gear (shorts, t-shirts) and had a walk around the little village, a good glass of wine and a nice fish-and-chips meal on our terrace. After that we went inside to watch some TV and had a good sleep. The next morning we checked out, but not before borrowing some spades from the owners, to go to Ocean Beach. Itis a 5 minute drive from Kawhia and another awesome NZ-experience; Black sand dunes and beach, plus: Natural Hotpools! At low tide, you can dig a hole and warm (hot!) water comes up, so you can dig yourself your own hot tub on the beach! It was wonderful, except for the sun burn that Bas got and severely troubled him the rest of the week. You can ask him if it was worth it… π but I think it was another weekend we will not easily forget! On Saturday we took a touristic route back to Auckland, driving by the Bridal Veil Falls, more stunning New Zealand scenery! Enjoy the pics of this beautiful area below.
A while ago, I (Judith) won a contest on Facebook, and the prizes included a Waiheke Wine Tour for 2 and a 50 dollar certificate to spend at the Botswana Butchery Restaurant. We had planned to go on the Wine Tour with my mom when she was here, but unfortunately the tour was cancelled that day. So, we still had the voucher and Bas and I decided on the sunny Sunday of November 4th, to take the tour! After a gorgeous wine-tasting and fun filled afternoon, we took the ferry back to shore and had a NZ-top 2-delicious-meal at Botswana Butchery! The pictures below speak for itself!
After our last blog update about our future plans, it’s not like we’ve been just waiting around till we can get out of New Zealand! No, on the contrary! We are trying to make the most of our time here in this beautiful country and we are making a lot of beautiful (day) trips. I’ll be posting a few blogs this week with pictures of the things we did over the last couple of weekends.
First of all: Rangitoto!
A few weeks ago we were supposed to go skiing with the Science department (Bas’ colleagues) for the weekend, but unfortunately the mountain had just closed on the previous Monday, partly due to the wonderful summery weather. So, we decided to take a day trip to Rangitoto Island instead with our friends Aaron (Bas’ colleague) and Val (his wife). Rangitoto is a volcanic island just off the coast of Auckland. It is a very young island, formed only about 500-600 years ago and pretty spectacular! Such a very different landscape, so close to where we live! We hiked for a couple of hours around the island and up to the summit. The views were stunning.
Since we took the early-bird ferry (at 7 am!) we took the 1pm ferry back to town and still had a few hours in the afternoon to relax before heading out to Linda and Neil’s place. Linda is Bas’ head of department and they had offered to host a BBQ for the science teachers. It was a beautiful warm evening and we sat outside on their porch till past 10pm, enjoying delicious food!
Have a look at the pictures to get an idea of what Rangitoto looks like and what fun we had that day!
Here it is; the final photo blog with pictures of Maria’s stay in New Zealand.
It was a beautiful sunny day when we were walking part of the Abel Tasman track on October 7th. We had booked the Abel Tasman National Park Discoverer Day package. The boat cruising along the coast dropped us off at Bark Bay around 11.30am and picked us up at Anchorage Bay 12 km further at 3.30pm. It was a gorgeous walk and the views were stunning at times! After that we drove on to Nelson, where we stayed the night.
The next day we drove from Nelson to Picton, but we did a bit of detour towards Seddon, to visit the Yealands Estate winery. This remarkable vineyard even produces wine for the Dutch market and we had actually had a couple of their wines with our Christmas dinner last year! We had a nice tour and tasting, before returning to Picton. We went to bed early, because we had booked the early (7am) ferry, which meant we had to check in at 6am and therefore get up at 5! Ouch!
However, this gave us the opportunity to drive from Wellington to Turangi on Tuesday, and arrive there quite early (around 3pm), leaving us some time to relax, go for a beautiful walk around the village, have dinner and sleep before heading back to Auckland on Wednesday the 10th.
We were back home around 2pm. Since it was Maria’s last day (she had to fly back to the Netherlands on Thursday the 11th of October) we spent the day unpacking and packing, relaxing, going out for dinner in Titirangi (delicious Indian food) and watching Boer zoekt Vrouw on Uitzendinggemist together π It was difficult to say goodbye on Thursday morning, but we definitely have had some incredible 3 weeks creating many lovely shared memories!
Bas and I only had a few more days off, before we both had to go ‘back to reality’ (working), which we spent relaxing and preparing for the last term of the school year. Time is flying actually, since this is already Bas’ final term teaching in New Zealand, but we’ll tell you more about our plans for the future in our next blog. Stay tuned!
We are spoiling you with updates! π Here are some more pictures of Maria’s stay in New Zealand / our roadtrip. These are from the drive from Picton to Hamner Springs (with a stop near Kaikoura, marvelling at the seal colony), our stay in Hamner Springs, the drive to Westport through the mountains (unfortunately covered in clouds and with heavy rainfall), via the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, and finally our drive to Motueka, near Abel Tasman Park, where the sun finally started to shine again after another whole day of rain. Yay!
We’re almost there; I’ll post one more blog later this week, and then I should be up-to-date again.
(Finally) more pictures of our roadtrip through NZ with Maria! We still have a whole bunch to sort out (Maria stayed till Oct. 11) so there’s more to come over the next few days. The pictures in this blog post are of our drive from Napier to Wellington, the ferry to Picton (South Island) and a drive through the Marlborough region and the Queen Charlotte Drive between Picton and Havelock.
